    Abstract: James Boyer May (1904-1981) was a poet, essayist, and publisher in Los Angeles. The collection consists of May's books, working records, mailing lists , publication files and correspondence. It is a solid record of the small press and poetry publishing activity in the United States and other countries from the 1950's to 1970's.

    The collection was purchased for the Patrons of the Library by English student Jan Amsberry and the Patrons in turn donated to the Special Collections.

    Biography/Administrative History

    Was the editor of Trace Magazine, 1952 to present; editor, Eight American Poets (An Anthology) London, 1952; editor, Poetry Los Angeles, 1958; Host on Poetry & Talk, and Reading Rail programs for University of Southern California radio. 1957-59; editor, U.S. Library of Congress, taped series of 24 American poets reading their own works, 1959; lectures and talks on modern writing, including radio broadcasts for American networks and abroad; guest-editor, various special issues of periodicals.
