Biographical / historical:

Mabel Katherine Fossler (1884-1969) was born near Raymond, Nebraska; she was the daughter of Christian Fossler and Kathrine (Andra) Fossler. In 1907 to 1908 and 1908 to 1909, Mabel was enrolled in the nursing program at Johns Hopkins Medical School, Baltimore, but does not appear to have completed the program. In 1916, she moved to Pasadena, California, to care for her mother. She also took graduate courses in education and psychological testing at University of California, Los Angeles, and a medical course at the University of Southern California. During World War I, she did group and individual testing of children in Pasadena City schools. In 1953, Mabel returned to Lincoln to pursue several legal activities. First, she sued the State of Nebraska for 5 million dollars over land her father had owned at 10th and Vine. The case appears to have been dismissed by the Nebraska legislature. In 1954, she ran in the Democratic Primary for Governor of Nebraska. She earned 4.5% of the votes, compared to 53.2% for William Ritchie, 25.1% for P. J. Heaton, and 17.2% for A. E. Swanson. In the general election, Ritchie lost to Robert Crosby, the Republican candidate. After returning home to Pasadena, Mabel ran unsuccessfully in 1959 for the Pasadena School Board. Mabel passed away in 1969 in Pasadena.
