Background

Scope and content:

The Allen White papers contain materials related to his work as an event organizer, publicist, reporter and gay activist. White died in 2009 at the age of 70. This small collection contains correspondence, ephemera, financial records, media strategies, news clippings, photographs, press releases and programs related to various events he helped plan or publicize. These include the 1986 Cable Car Awards, the 1987 Closet Ball, Stonewall 25, the 1996 Domestic Partnership Ceremony at City Hall, the 1997 Flagpole Dedication and Rainbow Flag Ceremony, Pride 1998 (“Shakin’ It Up”), and AIDS conferences. Photographs include an image of a gay marching band at the 1979 Columbus Day parade, and a number of pictures taken by Dan Nicoletta, including one of Harvey Milk with José Sarria. There is also the first page of a speech delivered by Cleve Jones at City Hall in 1985, and White’s Gay Community Award for Columnist of the Year, which he won for his event coverage.
