Background

Scope and content:

Dealer's description:

Collection of 10 original photographs (9.5 x 7.5 in), each with place and date (Wednesday, Oct. 14, 1942) written on verso, of scenes of this St. Helena winery, uncluding views of the tasting room, the ceiling, the vineyards, and the winery grounds. Five of the photographs were taken by RKO photographer Fred hendrickson (with Radio Pictures ink stamp on verso) and three photos with the stamp (on verso) of Jack Alban. Hendrickson (1884-1946, born Humphrey Grylls) was a staff photographer at RKO, specializing in still photography on film sets (e.g., "I was a fugitive from a chain gang," "The Gay Divorcee," Cimaroon") and studio portraits of film stars (e.g., Carole Lombard, Fred Astaire). Perhaps these photos of the famous California winery were shot while scouting for a film location.

Biographical / historical:

Beringer Bros. Winery was founded by Jacob and Frederick Beringer in 1876 and is known for being the first winery to host public tours (1934), one of the first gravity-fed facilities, and for only ever having 9 winemakers.
