Edgar Bergen (1903-1978) was an American actor, comedian, radio performer, and ventriloquist. His ventriloquism characters included Charlie McCarthy and Mortimer Snerd. Bergen, as a teenager was given ventriloquism lessons by famous ventriloquist Harry Lester (1878-1956) for three months. Charlie McCarthy, the ventriloquist puppet is housed in the National Museum of American History at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. Actress Candice Bergen is Bergen's daughter.
