Biographical / Historical
Doug Nelson was founder and curator of the Air Force Flight Test Museum, located on Edwards Air Force Base in the Antelope
Valley area of Southern California. After a career in the Air Force from 1964 to 1986, Nelson established the museum in the
early 1990s. He remained involved until his retirement in 2007, and died in late 2020.
Scope and Contents
Collection includes original patent documents from Douglas Aircraft Company; issues of industry magazines
Douglas Airview and
Flying; and Air Force flight manuals for the Lockheed F-104 A/B Starfighter (1964), Fairchild-Republic A-10 Thunderbolt II (1975),
Boeing YC-14 (1977), McDonnell F-4C Phantom II (1979), General Dynamics F-16A/B (1979), and Rockwell B-1A (1980). There are
also original drafting drawings of an F86D (undated), and F100-A (1972) aircraft, and a Pratt & Whitney J57 jet engine with
afterburner (1951).
