Scope and content:

The collection consists of loose leaf sketchbooks created by artist Alice Jean Small. The titles are "Sketch Book of Mexico," "My Around the World Sketchbook," and My Sketchbook in the Orient." The artwork is done mostly in marker, crayon, and watercolor. Also included is what Ms. Small refers to as a résumé, which contains photocopies of articles concerning herself and her work.

Biographical / historical:

Alice Jean Small (1918-2009) was a trained artist, graduating from the University of Washington School of Fine Arts with a Master's Degree. She continued her studies, traveling around the world and settling in California's Monterey Peninsula.

Alice Jean Small was born in Sandpoint, Idaho, on December 11, 1918. She studied art at the Derbyshire School of Art and she went on to obtain a Master of Fine Arts Degree in water color from the University of Washington School of Fine Arts. Following her graduation, she studied at many universities in both the United States as well as foreign countries, learning from artists such as Amedee Ozenfant, Emilio Amero, Monsieur Fernand Leger, Alexander Archipenko, and Saito. For two years Ms. Small worked as Crafts Director for the United States Army at Camp Zama, Camp Drew, Camp Ojima, and Camp Bender. In addition, Ms. Small taught art in public schools and universities located in the United States as well as teaching private lessons. She was active in many honorary societies for her work and won many awards. She also had her work featured globally in cultural centers and museums, including the American Cultural Center in Japan, the Seattle Art Museum, and the Chinese Room Smith Tower Gallery.
