The bulk of the collection consists of NGRA’s office files, which were arranged alphabetically by topic. Materials come from both the Los Angeles and San Francisco offices. The collection contains administrative records; correspondence; board materials, including meeting minutes; financial records, including annual reports and fundraising materials; materials from conferences and events; membership materials; releases and packets; reports; timelines of significant events in LGBT legal history; a scrapbook of newspaper clippings; photographs, contact sheets, and slides from events; audiotapes of the 1988 Lavender Law Conference; and videotapes. Noteworthy subjects include the legal and civil liberties ramifications of the AIDS epidemic; the 1987 March on Washington; National Coming Out Day, which was co-founded by psychologist Robert Eichberg and Jean O’Leary, Executive Director of NGRA; and the National Lesbian and Gay Task Force. This collection contains records from the National Gay Rights Association (NGRA), a membership-supported, nonprofit, public-interest law firm. Founded in 1978, NGRA promoted the rights of LGBT people and fought to end discrimination based on sexual orientation through legal action and by educating attorneys. NGRA had offices in Los Angeles and San Francisco. It closed its doors in May 1991.
