This collection contains three correspondence from family and friends to Cassie Burgan during the Civil War.

The first letter, dated March 9, 1862, was written by Samuel Winsor from Camp Andrew Jackson in Nashville, Tennessee. Samuel describes sitting in the camp and listening to a regimental band playing in the distance. He is describing a moment of peace he is experiencing.

The second letter was dated April 9, 1863 and was written by G. Hughes, a friend encamped neart Murfreesboro, Tennessee. He writes about the uncertainty of the war and believes the "peacemakers" are great men but they are going to be unsuccessful because they do not respect the soldiers.

Cassie also received a letter from her brother, James Burgan of the 31st Indiana Volunteers. He was a musician in Company C. He writes about the Battle of Atlanta on July 22, 1864 in detail, though he was in a support unit that did not get called to reinforce.

The collection also contains a newspaper clipping dated March 20, 1865 that reports how James Burgan was killed in an accident involving a train car.

The collection also provides transcriptions of the letters, which were typed by the donor.
