Angela Jelliffe's childhood love of music led her to the University of Redlands in 1969, when she enrolled in Johnston College. At Redlands, Jelliffe performed with the Chapel Singers and University Choir, graduating with a BA in Music in 1972. After several years working full time, she continued her formal musical education at CSU Los Angeles, where she received a Master's in composition in 1988, and UCLA, where she received a Doctorate in composition in 1994. She taught at the University of Redlands in Johnston College and the School of Music from 1995 until 2008.
Her orchestral work Orion was read by the Los Angeles Philharmonic Institute Orchestra in 1989; other noted works include The Chinese Teapot Teaches Patience (1992), performed frequently by the Octagon New Music Ensemble and recorded on Albany Records, The Web We Weave (1996) read by the San Francisco Women's Philharmonic, and Legacy (1997) premiered by the Fullerton Community Orchestra.
Jelliffe quickly built a reputation as a dedicated teacher, earning the Friends of Music Teacher of the Year award after her first year at Redlands. She co-founded the University's African Drumming Ensemble with Scott Vance in 2002, and co-directed the New Music Ensemble from 2000 to 2005.
