Scope and content:

Collection reflects the life of work of Maximino "Max" Limon Atilano. A resident of Escondido for over 75 years, Mr. Atilano worked for the Escondido Lemon Association as a foreman, was an active member of the Knights of Columbus, and was leader of local band, "Max Atilano and his troubadours." Materials represented in the collection include music sheets, personal correspondence, and photographs. Strengths of the collection include labor union records and labor reports pertaining to Escondido's citrus industry. Newspaper articles, newsletters, and programs from the organizations in which Mr. Atilano was involved are also represented. Languages represented in the materials include Spanish and English.

Biographical / historical:

Maximino "Max" Limon Atilano was born in 1900 in Jalisco, Mexico and settled in Escondido by the age of 15. Starting as a citrus grove laborer, Mr. Atilano eventually became a field foreman for the Sunkist Lemon Association. Heavily involved in the local Knights of Columbus for more than 70 years, Mr. Atilano was equally passionate in music and played classical violin. As leader of "Max Atilano and his troubadours," he composed the music that the band would play at local festivals and celebrations. Mr. Atilano died in 1992.
