Scope and content:

These papers document the life and career of George P. Shultz, particularly in economics, business, and in American domestic and foreign policy. Included are materials from his service in the Marines, his years in academia at the University of Chicago and at Stanford University, his roles in the presidential cabinets of Richard M. Nixon and Ronald Reagan, his work at Bechtel Corporation, and the numerous projects and initiatives Shultz launched as Thomas W. and Susan B. Ford Distinguished Fellow at the Hoover Institution.

Materials include correspondence, speeches and writings, memoranda, reports, reflections, studies, printed material, photographs, audio and videotapes, digital media, art, and memorabilia.

United States secretary of labor, 1969-1970; director, Office of Management and Budget, 1970-1972; secretary of the treasury, 1972-1974; vice president and president of Bechtel, 1974-1982; secretary of state, 1982-1989; distinguished fellow, Hoover Institution, 1989-2011; Thomas W. and Susan B. Ford distinguished fellow, Hoover Institution, 2011-2021.

Box 754 and art rack items may not be used without the permission of the Archivist.

Materials must be requested in advance via our reservation system. If there are audiovisual or digital media material in the collection, they must be reformatted before providing access.
