Scope and content:

Collection includes correspondence, typescripts, photographs, sketches, notes and reprints, slides, sound tapes; also, collection of models of the foot and ankle, separately housed.

Biographical / historical:

Born in San Jose, CA, Dr.Inman received his B.A., an M.A. in Anatomy (1929), and M.D. (1932), and a Ph.D. in Anatomy (1934), all from the University of California. He did his internship at UC Hospital and SFGH, 1936-37.

At various times he was a fellow in orthopedic surgery at SFGH (1939-40), instructor in anatomy, professor (from 1952) and chairman of the Department of Orthopedic Surgery, from 1957 to 1970. He was also Director of the Biomechanics Laboratory 1957-73, which he helped to establish after WWII to deal with the problems of amputees, and a Fulbright lecturer in 1964-65.

Dr. Inman was associate editor of The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, and a member of numerous professional societies, among them the American Orthopedic Association, the American Medical Association, the Orthopedic Research Society (a founder member), and a corresponding fellow of the British Orthopedic Association. He served on many professional committees: the National Foundation, the Committee on Prosthetics Research and Development of the National Academy of Sciences, and the Committee on Rehabilitation of the San Francisco Medical Society.His research interests included human locomotion and biomechanics of the shoulder, foot and ankle. Author of many journal articles, Dr. Inman's last monograph publications were Joints of the Ankle (1976), and Human Walking (1981).
