The collection consists of manuscripts, letters, documents, maps, 35 notebooks and field books related to Ephraim G. Squier's unrealized project for the Honduras Interoceanic Railway. There is material related to explorations and surveys with reference to the practicality of a ship canal in the area, as well as maps of both Central and South America.
- Biographical / historical:

Ephraim George Squier (1821-1888) was an archaeologist, author and diplomat. He went to Central America in 1849 as chargรฉ d'affaires and returned in 1853 to make surveys for the Honduras Interoceanic Railway. He served as United States commissioner to Peru (1863 to 1865) and as consul general of Honduras in New York in 1868. Squier also wrote many books on Central and South America.
