Scope and content:

The collection is divided into 40 series for each Department or "Study Section" of the Ebell of Los Angeles from 1894 to 1993. The bulk of the records are minute books, with some additional programs, flyers, and correspondence. The collection is arranged alphabetically by subject: Applied Design, Art and Travel, Bible Literature, Bird Study and Forestry, Book Chamber, Books and Current Literature, Browning, California History, California History and Land Marks, Californiana, Choral, Cinematography, Civics, Conversation, Creative Writing, Drama, Drama Workshop, English, Expression, French, Garden, Home, Latin American Cultures, Law, Literary Interpretation, Literature and Speech (formerly Better American Speech; American Speech and Literature), Lives and Times, Music, Parliamentary Law, Poetry, Psychology, Public Affairs, Science, Shakespeare, Small Town Improvement, Social Science, Spanish, Tourist, Voice Training, and War Economics.

Biographical / historical:

Since its beginnings in 1894, The Ebell created "Study Sections" which later developed into Departments for the study of various subjects. Each section was led by a curator, and by November 1895, there were 12 sections: Tourist, Current Events, Italian, Conversation, Archaeology, Music, German, Economics, Original Composition, French Conversation, China Painting, and Physical Culture. New departments were added throughout the years and offered instruction, guest lectures, paper presentations, performances, and other events.
