The collection consists of letters and documents related chiefly to the military career of Mexican brigadier General José Gil de Partearroyo.
José María Gil de Partearroyo (born 1811), Mexican brigadier general and minister of war and navy, served in the Mexican-American War (1846-1848) and was sympathetic to the cause of Benito Juárez during the War of the Reforma (1857-1859) and the three-year war known as the European Intervention of 1860-1862. In May 1863 he retired from military service after serving for thirty-nine years.
