The collection consists mostly of letters and documents (including orders) addressed to José María Gil de Partearroyo and related chiefly to military matters, the Mexican War, the War of the Reforma, the European Intervention, and with Benito Juárez and Miguel Miramón.

Correspondents represented in the collection include: Demetrio Chavero (20 letters), Santos Degollado (3 letters), Benito Juárez (2 letters), José Mejía (16 letters), Melchor Ocampo (2 letters), and Antonio López de Santa Anna (1 letter). There are four items written by José María Gil de Partearroyo.

Biographical / historical:

José María Gil de Partearroyo (born 1811), Mexican brigadier general and minister of war and navy, served in the Mexican-American War (1846-1848) and was sympathetic to the cause of Benito Juárez during the War of the Reforma (1857-1859) and the three-year war known as the European Intervention of 1860-1862. In May 1863 he retired from military service after serving for thirty-nine years.
