Background

Scope and content:

The collection documents Vincent's life starting in 1984 and includes his years living with AIDS. The diaries were the basis for Elizabeth Stone's A Boy I Once Knew (Chapel Hill, NC: Algonquin Books, 2002) which recounts how she was affected by the bequest of these diaries from her former high school student.

Biographical / historical:

Vincent was a gay man who died of AIDS in 1995. He was a diarist who chronicled his day-to-day life in San Francisco.

The Vincent Diaries were donated to The San Francisco Public Library by Elizabeth Stone in 2002.

Restrictions:

The collection is not available. All diaries are offsite for the NEH-funded scanning project: "The San Francisco Bay Area's Response to the AIDS Epidemic: Digitizing, Reuniting, and Providing Universal Access to Historical AIDS Records".

Terms of access:

All requests for permission to publish or quote from manuscripts must be submitted in writing to the City Archivist. Permission for publication is given on behalf of the San Francisco Public Library as the owner of the physical items.
