Background

Scope and content:

This collection comprises sound recordings, production files, administrative records, banners, and other material, 1970-2011, from IMRU Radio, an LGBT radio program airing on KPFK Pacifica Radio in Los Angeles. The bulk of the collection is sound recordings on open reel audiotape. The collection also includes audiocassettes, compact discs, and digital audio tape (DAT) cassettes. The sound recordings include full episodes, feature segments, news segments, promotional segments, airchecks, outtakes, and other elements used in the production of IMRU episodes. Sound recordings also include LGBT-related productions of shows that aired on KPFK, such as This Way Out and Radio GLLU (Gay and Lesbian Latinos Unidos). The production files include log sheets, transcripts, resource material, and other documents used in the research and production of IMRU segments, such as featured stories and the Community Calendar segment. The general administrative records include bylaws, minutes, correspondence, program schedule flyers, and other material for the on-going operations of IMRU Radio. In particular, the administrative records document the early years (1970s) of IMRU when it was operated by the all-volunteer Gay Radio Collective.

Biographical / historical:

Excerpted from the IMRU Radio website: "The original IMRU Collective formed in September of 1974 after volunteers responded to flyers KPFK left at the Gay Community Services Center seeking gay male programmers interested in producing a new gay themed show on the station. Greg Gordon, Enrich Murrello, and Colin McQueen answered the call and began producing The Great Gay Radio Conspiracy at 11pm the 3rd Tuesday of every month. Soon the Gay Radio Collective had expanded to include lesbians, moved to Sunday at 10pm and was being broadcast three times a month, and in February of 1975 The Great Gay Radio Conspiracy changed its moniker to the one it still answers to 36 years later... IMRU [I Am, Are You?]."

"Since 1983 the IMRU Radio Collective has worked under the auspices of Overnight Productions, a California 501c3 non-profit founded to promote civil rights, social action, and advocacy for the LGBT community via radio production. Besides IMRU, Overnight Productions is responsible for the internationally-syndicated This Way Out [...] Today, many of the features produced for IMRU also air on This Way Out and vice versa."

"IMRU has received numerous community and professional broadcasting awards over the years, including at least ten Golden Mike Awards from the Radio and Television News Association of Southern California and a Silver Reel Award from the National Federation of Community Broadcasters."

As of 2014, IMRU Radio continues to air weekly on KPFK Pacifica Radio.
