Background

Scope and content:

The collection consists of the documents produced by the Seaver Faculty Association and its members between 1992 and 2013. It is made up of chronologically ordered files relating to numerous Seaver Faculty Association meetings, governance, and activities, as well as university matters. Documents cover a wide range of topics including meeting minutes, sexual relations policies; budget negotiations; Tenure policy changes; Notice and Comment policies; Steven Moore Trials; governance of the Seaver Faculty Association; and faculty issues relating to activities, policies, and procedures. Documents relate to various committee's under the SFA, though primarily the SFA Executive Committee. Also included are documents relating to other organizations within Pepperdine University, such as Seaver Diversity Council and University Faculty Council.

The majority of the collection is between the years 2001 and 2011. Two files, from 1992 through 1994, are included in this collection, contacting documents about the Seaver Faculty Association and its functions when it was called Faculty Organization of Seaver College.

Biographical / historical:

The Seaver Faculty Association (SFA) was voted into existence in 1995, as a new incarnation of its predecessor, the Faculty Organization of Seaver College (FOSC). The purpose of SFA is to provide a forum where faculty members can discuss academic and professional matters, communicate as a single body with the Pepperdine administration, become more involved in the governance of Seaver College, and promote collaboration within Seaver College Faculty. In 2020, the Seaver Faculty Association was renamed Seaver Faculty Senate.

The SFA Executive Committee consists of the president, the president-elect, the immediate past president, the secretary-treasurer and one representative from each of the eight academic divisions elected at large, and one representative from the Seaver librarians. One function of the SFA Executive Committee is to serve as a liaison for the various standing committees of the SFA, as well as appointing said committees.

The University Faculty Council (UFC) is a similar organization founded in 2001, containing members from all of Pepperdine's five schools and serves to provide a broader voice in order to achieve university-wide faculty goals.
