Scope and content:

A collection of correspondence, engravings, photographs, and printed material. Correspondents in the collection include Thomas Bailey Aldrich, Henry Ward Beecher, Robert Browning, Ralph Waldo Emerson, William Lloyd Garrison, Ulysses S. Grant, Horace Greeley, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Oliver Wendell Holmes, James Russell Lowell, Lydia Dodge Cabot Parker, Theodore Parker, Hannah E. Stevenson, and John Greenleaf Whittier. The collection also includes engravings and photographs of many of the correspondents and their homes, and printed invitations and circulars.

Biographical / historical:

Thomas Wentworth Higginson (1823-1911) was a minister, author, abolitionist, politician, and soldier. After serving in the American Civil War, Higginson spent much of the rest of his life fighting for the rights of freed people, women, and other disfranchised people. He is also remembered as a mentor to poet Emily Dickinson.

The material was originally bound in two large extra illustrated volumes which were disbound by Huntington Library staff; the original order of the volumes was retained when the material was processed.
