Biographical / Historical
Clyde Adrian Woods (January 17, 1957 - July 6, 2011) was an associate professor of Black Studies and acting director of the
Center for Black Studies Research at the University of California, Santa Barbara since 2005. Previously, Dr. Woods also taught
at Pennsylvania State University and the University of Maryland.
With a Ph.D. in Urban and Regional Planning from UC Los Angeles, Dr. Woods developed a unique research program that engaged
social and public policy issues by examining the cultural practices of those oppressed by such policies. While at UCSB, he
engaged in two long-term research projects within the Department of Black Studies, one focused on rebuilding efforts in New
Orleans and the other on creating a network of community members and scholars studying race and policy issues in the Los Angeles
area, as well as led several campus-wide initiatives, including the Black California Project and the development of an environmental
racism-environmental justice curriculum initiative.
Throughout his career, Woods authored and edited four books -
In the Wake of Hurricane Katrina: New Paradigms and Social Visions;
Development Drowned and Reborn: The Blues and Bourbon Restorations in Post-Katrina New Orleans;
Black Geographies and the Politics of Place; and Development Arrested: Power and the Blues in the Mississippi Delta. At the time of his death, Woods was also working on a book on Black California, which was eventually edited and published
by his former colleagues as
Black California Dreamin': The Crises of California's African-American Communities.
