Scope and content:

This collection includes the Warner Bros. related materials belonging to William "Bill" Schaefer (1910-1991), executive assistant to Jack Warner (1892-1978). Materials include miscellaneous advertising materials and film programs; copies of "Vitagraph Bulletin of Life Portrayals" (1911-1915), the Vitagraph house organ; 4 copies of "The Edison Kinetogram" (November 1, 1909-December 15, 1909); and a notebook of Vitaphone releases listing name of act or artist, scene, songs or music played, classification, trailers, and features with cast and synopses (1927-1930). In addition, there is a research scrapbook for Yankee Doodle Dandy (1942) containing photographs of George M. Cohan and family, photostats of clippings from the period, playbills, publicity, and photographs of the New York theatrical district and theaters (ca. 1927).

Biographical / historical:

William L. Schaefer (1909-1991) began working as executive assistant to Jack L. Warner, the head of production for Warner Bros. Studio, in 1933. He continued to work for Warner until Warner's death in 1979. Schaefer later was involved in work documenting the early history of Warner Bros. through interviews and contributing to the book The Warner Bros. Story. He was married to Margaret Schaefer.
