The Babette Neugass Saunders Photograph Album (1914-1915) collection contains one photograph album complied by Neugass Saunders and features images mostly of California and the American West. Other images are taken in Mexico, New Orleans, New York City, British Columbia, Utah, Arizona, and Wales. This album contains a mixture of photographs and postcards that feature images of mining towns; Chinatown in San Francisco; Muir Woods; Yosemite; Babette's first apartment in San Francisco; Babette's friends including Mr and Mrs. A.B. Ford and their family; Mr and Mrs. H. Parker; "Howard Gould's sister" and her husband [Wong Su Yu]; Napa Valley; Arizona; New Orleans; New York; Wales; Juarez, Mexico; Salt Lake City; and others.

Some of the inscribed images include: "Scenes near Castle Rock, Colorado"; "A circus in Western America"; "Gamblers Row near Mining Camp Nevada"; "Scenes in Chinatown, San Francisco"; "Mrs. Gould's sister married to Chinese and lives in Chinatown, San Francisco"; "Among the redwoods"; "On the way up to Mount Tamalpais"; "Country Club, Burlingame, California"; "Panama Pacific Exposition 1915"; "Greek Theatre at Berkeley"; "The famous cypress trees near Carmel, Cal."; "Mr and Mrs. Park at their prune ranch, Napa County"; "Following the trail on horseback in Yosemite Valley"; "Railway Station, Arizona"; "Pasadena"; "Hopi Indians house in Arizona"; "Castle Canyon near Devils River, Texas Street in Juarez"; "Chinese Pirate Vessel, 160 years old. Acquired by Americans for show purposes"; "Victoria and Vancouver British Columbia, January 1915"; and others.

Also included in this photograph album is a page of drawings featuring sketches mostly of someone named "Herbert"; two maps-"Chicago, Milwaukee, & St. Paul Railway and connecting lines" and "Southern Pacific Steamship Lines between New York and New Orleans"; and a few other documents: "Organ Recitals in the Tabernacle Salt Lake City Utah" [program], "Articles of Faith of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints", and "I Never Have Seen Los Angeles" by Charles [Truitt] Manhattan.

Biographical / historical:

This photograph album contains the inscription "From Babette Neugass to Elsie Harrison, with her promise to write, San Francisco January Nineteenth 1914..." inside the front cover. Babette (Heller) Neugass Saunders (1892-1941) was married to her first husband, Marvin Neugass in 1913 and had three children. Neugass had been drafted for World War I and passed away from the Spanish flu at Fort Taylor, KY in 1918. Babette was remarried to Saunders in 1921.
