Background

Scope and content:

The Charles A. Wallace collection contains materials related to film and television production circa the 1950s-1970s. The collection has two main components. The first contains materials from Wallace's carreer as a screenwriter for film and television. The second contains motion picture and television scripts that Wallace donated to the University of Redlands Armacost Library that were once used by students studying screenwriting. An addition to this section was donated by University of Redlands professor Bruce MacAllister in the 1980s. The scripts are a mix of original copies and photocopies.

The first component is separated into 4 series: Industrial, Education, and Documentary; Television; Motion Pictures; and Miscellaneous. Each series is further divided into subseries for individual productions.

The second compontent consists of a single series for the scripts. Items from the original donation from Charles Wallace are generally in alphabetical order by production title.

Biographical / historical:

Charles A. Wallace was a writer for film and television from the 1950s through the 1970s. Wallace's career in television included writing episodes for a number of differnet series including multiple episodes of notable westerns including Tales of Wells Fargo, Zane Grey Theater, and Johnny Ringo.

By the late 1960s, Wallace had become frustrated with the challenges of writing for television saying "Controls are exercised to such an extent that you're no longer writing so much as you are discussing and negotiating…You write something, and then it has to be approved, changed, discussed, or condemned by a story editor, or sometimes and associate producer, a producer, and executive producer, a studio executive, an advertising agency, a network executive, the sponsor." Wallace turned his attention towards writing films, including The Girl Who Knew Too Much starring Adam West and Nancy Kwan and Tiger by the Tail starring Christopher George and Tippi Hedren.

In the late 1960s, Wallace joined the Norton Air Force Base in San Bernardino, California where he worked as part of Air Force Audio-Visual Center. While there Wallace produced documentary and educational films about the United States Air Force.
