Collection context
Summary
Background
- Scope and content:
-
The Josie's Cabaret and Juice Joint records consist primarily of performance files created and kept by the club's manager, Donald Montwill (1954-2002). Montwill ran the club until 1996, when he was stricken with AIDS-related dementia. There are also a few promotional files and four years of Montwill's daily calenders (1992-1995). Josie's was a Castro institution for 10 years; it closed in 1999. In addition to booking acts for Josie's, Montwill was also a manager at the Valencia Rose (see 1993-07), an acclaimed cabaret that closed in 1985. Dirk Alphin served as operations manager of both clubs. See also Ron Lanza collection of Josie's Cabaret and Juice Joint records (2000-10).
