Scope and content:

Series 1 is comprised of papers from the Hugh G. Martin Collection. Included are the United States Department of the Air Force, Distinguished Flying Cross Award, April 1950 issued to Hugh G. Martin. It was given to Captain (then First Lieutenant) Hugh G. Martin, Air Corps, Army of the United States for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight, Asiatic-Pacific Theater of Operations, 31 October 1944 to 18 March 1945. There are also several menus, one from the Special train for Premier and Mrs. Nikita S. Khrushchev, Los Angeles to San Francisco on Septemver 20, 1959. In the fall of 1959, Nikita Khrushchev became the first Soviet premier to visit the United States. Included is a payroll from June 1872 to Michigan Central Railroad.

Series 2 is comprised of films, negatives and photographs from the Hugh G. Martin Collection. Several of the 8 mmm films have been digitized and links to the online content are available through the finding aid. The subjects of the films are Northwestern Pacific, Southern Pacific and Western Pacific. There are additional, non-railroad and travel films that are part of the collection but have not been digitized. The remaining films have been housed with the CSRM film collection.

Negatives from the collection have been catalogued and are part of the CSRM online catalog. Slides and albums have been housed with the CSRM slide collection and the CSRM albums collection.

There are framed photographs that have been housed with the CSRM artifact collection. These framed images include: CSM Aerotrain in Pasadena, California, Southern Pacific Coast Daylight after hitting a flatbed truck in King City, California, Virginia and Trucke No. 20 Tahoe" in the 1880's, a color image of the Union Pacific No. 4002, The Sierra Railroad No. 38, Southern Pacific No. 3764, Southern Pacific No. 4455, Santa Maria Valley No. 21,New Zealand Railways No. 572 in 1915, Narrow Gauge to Silvertown with a map, a group portrait that included J. Hungerford, G. Best, G. Kneiss, H. Martin, G.F. Company locomotive in Hawaii, K.R.R. No. 12.

Biographical / historical:

Hugh G. Martin was born on February 12, 1918 at New Salisbury, Indiana to the late Arvil I. and Cora [Hendricks] Martin. He was an Army Air Corp Veteran of World War II and a retired self employed building contractor. Hugh was a member of the Old Lake Club, Ramsey, IN and Old State Capitol V. F. W. Post No 2950, Corydon, IN. He passed away on January 23, 2018.
