Background

Scope and content:

Collection of 207 glass plate negatives dating to the early 1900s. They appear to have been taken by the same photographer, and include many casual family shots, as well as landscapes, and points of interest around the Monterey area and Santa Clara County. The original dry plate negative boxes were donated with the negatives, and contain clues in the form of handwritten notes, one of which is the name "Alice Wheeler." Another note reads, "Printed 1912."

Biographical / historical:

The woman referred to on the box may be Alice Wheeler, born in Vermont in 1890. Her parents were farmer Francis (dob 1850) and Lilla Page Wheeler (dob 1855) of Vermont. During the 1910 Federal Census, twenty year old Alice is listed as living in San Jose on Alum Rock Avenue (near Porter and Miguelito), working as a music teacher. It would appear that she married Frank R. Foster of Illinois in 1915, and the couple lived on a farm located on Noble Ave in San Jose.

Acquisition information:
Donated to History San Jose in 2017. The donor purchased the complete set at a yard sale at a home in Willow Glen (San Jose) in the early 1980s.
