Background

Scope and content:

Record Series 316 contains Clarence Sawhill's correspondence from 1962-1973 relating to the UCLA Music Department, UCLA Bands, and his involvement in professional organizations.

This is an inactive Record Series; no additional University records are expected to be added.

Biographical / historical:

The Music Department at UCLA was founded as part of the College of Fine Arts in 1919 with the establishment of the Southern Branch of the University of California. Clarence Sawhill was a member of the Music Department and Director of Bands from 1952-1972. During his tenure, the Department had a staff of approximately 52, of whom 23 were professors. It listed approximately 500 undergraduate majors and 100 graduate students in degree programs, including the BA, MA, and PhD, as well as elementary and secondary school teaching credential programs. The Department regularly offered orchestral, operatic, band, choral, and chamber concerts to the University community.

The Band at UCLA started as the ROTC military band in 1928 and remained so until 1934 when it began appearing regularly at campus events such as football games, etc. In 1935, Leroy Allen became band director and the band began functioning formally as the school's band, separate from the ROTC program. In 1952, Sawhill became Band Director with assistant Kelly James, after leaving his position as USC Director of Bands. Sawhill expanded the band program to include a Concert Band, Symphonic Wind Ensemble, Varsity Band, and perhaps most notably, the UCLA Marching Band.

In addition to his UCLA Bands work, Sawhill was a member of the Music Department faculty and involved in several professional music and education organizations including the American Organization of University Professors, the American Bandmasters Association, and the Music Educators National Conference. He served as President of the National School Band, Orchestra, and Vocal Association, and the College Band Directors National Association.
