Scope and content:

This collection consists of 32 letters between Frederick Samuel Dellenbaugh and family and friends including letters from Irving Bacheller and Elwood P. Bonney. The letters from Bacheller are mainly personal with references to a screenplay. Bonney's letters include subjects on the Colorado River, John W. Powell, and the Grand Canyon. There is a manuscript by Maria Dellenbaugh McFarland titled, Graphic Account of the Emigration of the Dellenbaugh Family...1824-1827. In addition, there is an excerpt from B. [or R?] Young on the cause of death of three men from Powell's 1869 expedition.

Biographical / historical:

Frederick Samuel Dellenbaugh (1853-1935) was an American explorer. He was born in McConnelsville, Ohio and was educated in the United States and in Europe. An explorer of the American West at an early age, he was a member of an expedition that mapped and named the Escalante River and the Henry Mountains. From 1871 to 1873, he was artist and assistant topographer with Major Powell's second expedition down the Colorado River. He joined the 1899 Harriman Alaska Expedition financed by railroad magnate E. H. Harriman. He served as librarian of the American Geographical Society from 1909 to 1911 and became a fellow of the American Ethnological Society. He helped found the Explorers Club in 1904.
