    Biographical / Historical

Kusman and Veronica Krebes emigrated from Europe with their oldest child and had six more children in the United States (depends on the form and time they filled it out) after the turn of the twentieth century and settled in Gary, Indiana. Of the seven children, there was only one girl, Veronica P. (5/11/1912 - 11/21/1997). NOTE: on different forms such as birth and death certificates, their country of origin showed either Czechoslovakia or Austria.
The boys of the family include, all of whom served overseas across every branch of the American military, and all came home safely, in order beginning with the oldest:
    • John Ferdinand (3/25/1907 - 7/18/1989) who was born in Austria
    • Michael W. (12/11/1913 - 4/5/1961)
    • Ignatius P. (7/22/1915 - 2/14/1982)
    • Anthony Paul (3/23/1919 - 7/19/1985)
    • Frank George (12/1/1920 - 7/11/1998)
    • William Steven (12/11/1923 - 2/4/1997)
A newly made Krebes sister, Anthony's wife Juanita, is the recipient of most of the correspondence in this collection. Alice Juanita Krebes neé Chaney (9/1/1923 - 1/11/1993) was a native of Gary, IN and married Anthony on June 30, 1941, just over two years before he was drafted into the Army. The bulk of the correspondence shows their young marriage, powerful love and even insecurities. Letters from the brothers to Juanita show how well she fit in the family and how much they liked her.
A note on nicknames: Anthony was referred to, by nearly everyone, as Tick and Juanita was called Butch, even by the Krebes brothers. The spelling is sometimes difficult to make out, this information comes from the donor.
More complete biographies for each of the brothers will be described within their individual series.
