Scope and content:

Correspondence, flyers, clippings, and article typescripts from the San Diego-based gay and lesbian weekly newspaper Update, 1979-1993. Update was founded as a bi-weekly newspaper "distributed in resorts, bars, restaurants, and on the street" in Southern California, as well as cities in Arizona and Nevada. The bulk of the materials are article typescripts from issues published between 1979 and 1980.

Biographical / historical:

Update was a weekly gay and lesbian newspaper established in 1979, based in San Diego and distributed throughout Southern California, as well as to selected cities in the Southwest. Update founder and publisher Donald Hauck was also the founder of Dawn Media, a distributer for other publications marketed to the gay and lesbian community in the same area.
