Abstract:
Jack Whitehouse was a public relations executive, consultant, writer, and editor. This collection comprises primarily film reels and video recordings relating largely to the Japanese Steel Industry, one of Whitehouse's clients. It also contains correspondence, speeches, annual reports, press kits, presentations, and articles relating to the clients of Whitehouse's firms (International Public Relations Co., Ltd and Jack Whitehouse Associates), general press and publicity materials, slides and photographs, and audio cassettes and sound recordings.

Scope and content:

The Jack Whitehouse papers, 1957-1999, consist of films, videos, correspondence, clippings, articles, reports, speeches, press kits, presentations, printed materials, slides, photographs, audio cassettes, and sound recordings pertaining to Whitehouse's career as a public relations executive, consultant, president, and owner of both International Public Relations Co., Ltd. and Jack Whitehouse Associates. The majority of the material is comprised of 16mm acetate film reels, super 8s, and video cassettes regarding the Japanese Steel Industry (largely Nihon Kōkan Kabushiki Kaisha).

There are also paper materials consisting of press kits, remarks, presentations, correspondence, annual reports, and programs pertaining to Whitehouse's other clients, including the Consulate General of Japan, Fugi Bank, and Mitsubishi. The collection also contains general press, publicity, and printed materials in the form of clippings, flyers, brochures, pamphlets, press kits, seminars, and journals relating to various business and organizations with which Whitehouse was associated. Among those included are the International Student Center, the Japan Business Association of Southern California, Jetro, Japan America Society of Southern California, and Whitehouse's involvement with UCLA and USC as a frequent guest lecturer.

The remainder of the collection comprises numerous slides and a few photographs relating to various meetings and clients of Whitehouse's public relations firms, and magnetic tape sound recordings and audio cassettes largely of speeches and seminars.

Biographical / historical:

Jack Pendleton Whitehouse was a public relations executive and consultant, born in Los Angeles on August 18, 1924. He was a UCLA graduate, writer for the UCLA Office of Public Information from 1945 to 1949, and an editor of the Los Angeles Independent Publishing Company from 1946 to 1948.

From 1951 to 1953, Whitehouse was the managing editor of the Daily Sun in Yuma, Arizona. In 1958, he launched Jack Whitehouse Associates out of L.A., of which he was owner, president, and public relations counsel. In 1959, Whitehouse also established International Public Relations Co. Ltd. His clients included the Japanese Steel Industry (particularly Nihon Kōkan Kabushiki Kaisha), Fuji Bank, and the L.A. Consulate General for Japan.

Whitehouse was a frequent guest lecturer at colleges and universities, including USC and UCLA. He was the author of "International Public Relations", published in 1978, a member of the Los Angeles World Affairs Council, advisor of the Japan Philharmonic Society, director of the Japan Steel Information Center, executive council of the Japan America Society, and recipient of the Foreign Minister's award of the government of Japan in 1994. He passed away in 2005.

Processing information:

Acetate film reels were separated from the rest of the materials and placed in their own archival boxes. These five boxes were then transfered for housing at USC's Moving Image Archives.

The collection is organized into the following six series: 1. Films; 2. Videos; 3. International Public Relations Co. Ltd. and Jack Whitehouse Associates; 4. Press, publicity, and printed materials; 5. Slides and photographs; 6. Audio cassettes and sound recordings. Arrangement within each series is alphabetical.
