Scope and content:

This collection contains the professional papers of Monica C. Lozano from her tenure as Publisher and CEO of La Opini贸n and Senior Vice President of Newspapers for ImpreMedia LLC. The materials document various awards and honors that she received, correspondence with colleagues and collaborators, boards and committees that she served on, and clippings about her, her family, and the ImpreMedia LLC organization. Also included are presentations, photographs, correspondence and speeches from public appearances Lozano made at conferences, symposiums, panels, and other events. Lozano also served on various local, state, and federal boards about education, voting, and economics as well as attended various governmental functions in the United States and Mexico such as presidential inaugurations and state dinners. There are minimal materials related to her day-to-day work at La Opini贸n and ImpreMedia LLC.

La Opini贸n is a Los Angeles-based, Spanish-language daily newspaper founded in 1926 by the grandfather of Monica C. Lozano, Ignacio E. Lozano, Sr. The La Opini贸n and Ignacio E. Lozano Jr. series consists of business papers and background on the newspaper, La Opini贸n supplemental and special issues, voting initiatives, photographs of employees and La Opini贸n anniversary parties and events, audiovisual materials, and ephemera. The series also includes personal and business papers from Ignacio E. Lozano Jr., Monica C, Lozano's father, particularly, correspondence from his time serving as United States Ambassador to El Salvador.

The collection also contains unprocessed born digital media.

Biographical / historical:

Born in Los Angeles, California in 1956, Monica Cecilia Lozano is the daughter of Ignacio E. Lozano Jr. and Marta Navarro Lozano, and the granddaughter of Ignacio E. Lozano, Sr., the founder of prominent Spanish-language Los Angeles-based newspaper, La Opini贸n. Monica was raised in Newport Beach, California, with her three siblings, Jose I. Lozano, Leticia Lozano, and Francisco Lozano. In 1986, Monica married Marcelo Centanino, with whom she had two children and later divorced.

Monica began working at Lozano-family run La Opini贸n as managing editor in 1985 and took over from her older brother Jose as publisher and CEO of the paper in 2004. Under Monica's leadership, La Opini贸n reached new audiences, expanded distribution, doubled circulation, and became involved in more community and public service work. She spearheaded several supplements and special issues for La Opini贸n from the mid-1980s until the 2010s. These issues tackled social problems facing Latinos in Los Angeles, including immigration, prenatal care, AIDS, college readiness, and healthcare/health insurance, and both Monica and La Opini贸n received accolades for many of these special inserts.

In 1990, 50% ownership of the paper was sold to the Times Mirror Company, which merged with the Tribune Company in 2000. In 2004, ImpreMedia bought out the Tribune Company and regained full control over La Opinion. In 2012, control of La Opini贸n and ImpreMedia was sold by the Lozano family to US Hispanic Media. After leaving La Opini贸n, Monica went on to serve as President and CEO of College Futures Foundation, an organization dedicated to providing equitable access to higher education for students of color and low-income students. She has been involved with numerous local and federal governmental advisory boards. Presently, Monica serves on the Board of Directors for Bank of America and Apple Inc. Previously, she was on numerous boards of directors for companies and organizations including Rockefeller Foundation, Walt Disney Company, Unidos US, Tenent Healthcare Corporation, University of California Board of Regents, and University of Southern California Board of Trustees, among others. She has won countless awards for both her personal advocacy work and her work associated with her time as publisher, editor, and CEO of La Opini贸n.
