Background

Scope and content:

This collection contains one letter written by David Van Buren Thompson to his mother Dinah Johnson Freeman during the Civil War. In the letter, Thompson discusses sending over some money to her and mentions a new female companion he deems unsuitable for marriage due to her habits for chewing and smoking tobacco.

Alpheus Winter II later inscribed a note dated 3/2/1948 at the end of the letter describing how it came into his possession as a family inheritence.

Also included is a photocopy of a US Federal census conducted in Tolland county, Connecticut (1850) where Dina Johnson and her family are recorded. The letter was enclosed in a non-original envelope with contextual text inscribed on it.

Biographical / historical:

David V. B. Thompson (b. 9/26/1836) was born in Mansfield, Connecticut to Lyman Eugene Thompson and Dinah Johnson. According to the donor, David V.B. Thompson was either enlisted in the US Army or US Navy on the Missisiippi. The donor also states that he and his whole family drowned in the Mississippi in 1865 but was unable to verify this part of their family lore.
