Background

Scope and content:

This is a collection of copies. Originals belong to the University of Nebraska, Lincoln. Collection consists of oral history transcripts and oral history interviews conducted with quilters and quilting groups by the California Heritage Quilt Project from the 1990s through 2003.

Biographical / historical:

The California Heritage Quilt Project (CHQP) was started in 1984. Its goals were to seek out and record the history of California quilts and quiltmakers; to foster conservation and preservation of California's quilt heritage; to increase public awareness and appreciation of quilts; and to encourage the art of quilt making.

CHQP volunteers have engaged in documentation of California quilts and quilt making (in what the organization calls Quilt Search Days) and in oral history projects with quilters. CHQP's first project, "Ho For California! Pioneer Women and Their Quilts", resulted from initial documentation of quilts made in and brought to California. In May 1996, the California Sesquicentennial Commission asked the California Heritage Quilt Project to create a special quilt to reflect the 58 counties through pictorial images.
