Background

Scope and content:

Four glass plate negatives that were taken in Oleta, California. One of the images was identified as "Odd Fellows Hall, Oleta, Cal." The other three images showed a very early automobile in front of a house, a group of men behind some type of machinery, and a woman, sitting on the ground.

Biographical / historical:

Oleta, California is a small California town, that does not exist under that name anymore. The name "Oleta" was used for less than 60 years before the town was re-named Fiddletown.

Fiddletown in Amador County was first founded in 1849, allegedly, by settlers from Missouri, and it would grow rapidly during the Gold Rush. The name alternately originated from miners "fiddling around" during the summer months when the local water source vital for mining (Dry Creek), would run dry, or from the fact that many of the Missouri settlers played fiddles.

Embarrassed to be called a "man from Fiddletown," a local citizen would successfully lobby for changing the town's name, and in 1878 the town was renamed Oleta, after the citizen's daughter. In 1932, the old name of Fiddletown was restored.
