This collection includes various materials related to Being Alive San Diego, a local organization dedicated to supporting individuals and familes with HIV/AIDS, including newsletters, event flyers, HIV Consumer Guidebooks, children's books, as well as internal documents and miscellany related to the orginzation's roots. Also included are separated plaques, awards, and flat files. The collection was donated by Shannon Wagner.

Scope and content:

This collection contains materials related to the local chapter of HIV/AIDS support organization Being Alive, otherwise known as Being Alive San Diego (BASD), which includes a broad range of newsletters from 1990-2007, Consumer Guidelines from 1998-2000 and 2004-2006, event flyers from 1989-1998, news clippings, children's books, internal documents and letters and miscellany, all ranging from 1988 through 2007. This collection also includes a braille Consumer Guideline book from 1998, as well as various separated material such as awards and posters.

Biographical / historical:

Being Alive San Diego (BASD) is a local chapter of the Being Alive organization, and was founded in 1989 by six individuals living with HIV/AIDS in order to support folks also surviving with the same immunodeficiency. BASD began by providing services to individuals living with HIV/AIDS such as peer counseling and supplying food vouchers. Eventually, the organization grew to hosting galas and events and, in 2009, opened up a community center to assist with medical/pharmaceutical needs of HIV/AIDS patients, while also continuing to support with social services. Being Alive is still up and running today, and had its 30th anniversary in 2019.
