Scope and content:

This collection contains personal materials from Satoshi Sakurai's time in the 442nd Regimental Combat Team during World War II, including his Army uniform jacket. The collection consists of Satoshi Sakurai's US Army uniform jacket from the 442nd Regiment 100th Battalion Anti-Tank Group, a panormaic of Satoshi's Anti-Tank Company at Camp Shelby in October 1943, a publication from 1942-1945 "Entering 9ed Infantry Division (Buffalo), the 442nd Combat publication with a fold out man, and 36 pages of Gila River Detention Center records.

Biographical / historical:

Satoshi Sakurai was born in Los Angeles in 1918. He was sent to Gila River Detention Center in Arizona where he enlisted in the Army. He joined the 442nd Regiment Anti-Tank Company and saw combat in Italy and France. He returned to Los Angeles after the war and later married artist, Nancy Liberto Sakurai.
