Background

Scope and content:

A collection of twenty color photographs depicting Black motorcycle club members, along with their friends and families, at gatherings and posed with motorcycles. Most of the photographs in the collection are undated, but the few that have dates were created between 1978 and 1988. Motorcycle clubs--sometimes referred to as gangs--represented in the collection include the Rising Sons from Bakersfield, California; the Valiant Riders from Pasadena; and the Soul Brothers, who are located throughout California and the West Coast. Some of the pictures depict club gatherings and parties, with one showing a line-up of bikers in a tug of war contest at a park. A handful of photographs show children, girlfriends, wives, and/or women club members on bikes, but the majority of the bikers depicted appear to be men. Many of the bikers are shown wearing denim jackets and patches that bear the name of their clubs. The motorcycles pictured are mostly modified chopper style American bikes, along with a few Japanese sport bikes, of the era.
