Scope and content:

A collection of American Civil War correspondence between John A. Gilmore, his parents and his siblings. Also included is a "Certificate of Record" of John A. Gilmore issued by the Soldiers' and Saillors' Historical and Benevolent Society (1906).

Biographical / historical:

John A. Gilmore (1840-1911) was a resident of Mercer County, Illinois; his parents were Ephraim Gilmore and Julia Ann Gilmore. John A. Gilmore was a Union soldier of the 9th Illinois Volunteer Regiment Company "E." The regiment fought in Tennessee, Mississippi, taking part in the Battle of Shiloh, the advance on Corinth, Grant's Central Mississippi campaign, and General T. Sherman's March to the Sea. His brothers Robert N. Gilmore, Ezra Gilmore, and Edwin Gilmore served in Company "K" of the 102 Illinois Infantry Regiment. His father Ephraim Gilmore was aid-de-camp to General Eleazar A. Paine. John A. Gilmore married Sarah (McGinnis) Gilmore in 1870 and they had at least one son, Charlie Pruyn Gilmore. John A. Gilmore died on May 8, 1911, in Garnett, Kansas.
