Contains organizational records and biographical materials related to Japanese American kendo activities and the education of second-generation Japanese Americans in kendo on the West Coast.

Biographical / historical:

Nakamura Tōkichi (中村藤吉) was a Japanese martial artist and kendo educator. Trained in Japan, he traveled to the United States in 1929 to promote kendo in Hawaii and California. Shortly thereafter, he helped establish the Hokubei Butokukai, an organization dedicated to preserving and promoting Japanese martial arts and cultural traditions within the Japanese American community across North America.
