Background

Scope and content:

This collection comprises live sound recordings collected, mastered, or compiled by Walter Palmer, a freelance recording engineer based in San Francisco from 1971 to 1993. The recordings showcase performances by groups such as the Aurora String Quartet, the San Francisco Chamber Players, the Lesbian/Gay Chorus of San Francisco, the San Francisco Chamber Singers, the San Francisco Gay Men's Chorus, the Winifred Baker Chorale, and various other performers at venues across the Bay Area.

Acquisition information:
The Walter H. Palmer Collection was donated to the Stanford Archive of Recorded Sound by Ivy Lee Jr. in 1994.
Processing information:

The collection has been organized according to the original order of the items received. The descriptions were created using information from the print-based collection inventory and labels on the individual recordings. Entries include the title, performers, venues, composers, and dates whenever possible.

Arrangement:

The collection is arranged into five series; one comprised of Palmer's notes on the recordings, then four series comprised of sound recordings arranged by carrier type: Open reel tape (10.5-inch), Open reel tape (7-inch), Videocassettes (Beta and VHS), Audiocassettes and DATs.
