Abstract:
Harriet Butcher Ara Bia was born on March 1, 1901, went to Sunset School in Carmel, Calif. and later UC Berkeley. Her parents were William C. Butcher and Marietta Butcher. She was the niece of Preston W. Search, an educator and lecturer, and cousin of Frederick Preston Search, famed cellist. This collection is made up of 5 photo albums; 4 containing photographs of Carmel, “Casa de Rosas,” Big Sur, the Butcher and Search families, various pictures of Europe (Italy, Germany and Switzerland), and 1 album made up reproductions of various chateaus around Chantilly, France. There is 1 folder of few loose photographs of the Search and Butcher families, and 1 folder of paper materials. There is also a set of 36 ribbons and pins for various organizations and conventions in Ohio, belonging to Harriet’s mother, Marietta Search Butcher.

Biographical / historical:

Harriet Butcher Ara Bia (1901-1987) was born on March 1, 1901 went to Sunset School in Carmel, Calif. and later UC Berkeley. Her parents were William C. Butcher and Marietta Butcher. She was the niece of Preston W. Search, an educator and lecturer, and cousin of Frederick Preston Search, famed cellist. The Butcher and Search families spent a great deal of time together. In 1949 Harriet married Antone Ara Bia. They built a house in Carmel in 1950 with the help of the community, and until it was completed lived in a tent. Harriet died on August 10, 1987.
