Background
- Scope and content:
-
The materials consist of meeting minutes of the Hanna House board of governors documenting renovations.
- Biographical / historical:
-
In 1937, the distinguished architect Frank Lloyd Wright finalized the design of a residence for the Hanna family atop a hill overlooking Stanford University. the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake left it empty and desolate. The earthquake's impact included fractures and shifts in the walls, as well as the displacement of the meticulously crafted hexagonal concrete slab floor. Even the brick fireplace, with its hexagon-shaped structure, succumbed to the quake's force and twisted out of alignment. The restoration endeavors concentrated on preserving Wright's original vision while fortifying the structure with adequate seismic reinforcement for safety. For nearly a decade, the house remained closed. After a $2 million restoration initiative, it has now reopened its doors for public tours, seminars, and receptions. Today, after almost 60 years, the Hanna House stands as a celebrated triumph of experimental architecture.
