Biographical / historical:

The University of California Library Council was created on October 10, 1945 by University of California President Robert Gordon Sproul. The Library Council addresses library-related problems affecting more than one University of California campus, implements consistent policy and practice, and determines the appropriate distribution of responsibilities.

Acquisition information:
Library Council records were obtained from the administrative files of UCLA University Librarian Lawrence Clark Powell (1944-1961) and UCLA University Librarian Robert G. Vosper (1961-1973).

Prior to current arrangement, Library Council records were organized into two record series: Library Council Minutes 1945-1959 (Record Series 268) and Library Council Reports 1949-1965 (Record Series 269). In August 2006 additional material was located; the two record series were combined into one, Record Series 268, and renamed University of California (System). Library Council.
