Scope and content:

The collection contains documents collected by Adele Panofsky in her association with the Mid-Peninsula Citizens for Fair Housing organization. The materials include newsletters, officers and membership lists, correspondence, notes, publications, reports, newspaper clippings and other materials.

Biographical / historical:

Adele Panofsky was a resident of Los Altos, California. She was a member of the Mid-Peninsula Citizens for Fair Housing (MCFH) and served as the Treasurer from 1969-1978. The MCFH was originally created in 1964 to oppose Propistion 14. Proposition 14 was a California ballot iniative sponsored by the California Real Estate Association to overturn the Rumford Fair Housing Act's prohibition on discrimination on the basis of race and national origin. The iniative passed but was ruled inconstitutional by the California Supreme Court in 1966. MCFH continued to fight discrimination in housing in Palo Alto, Menlo Park, Mountain View and other municapalities of the Mid-Peninsula region of the San Francisco Bay Area.
