Background

Scope and content:

Record Series 813 represents the files of the Westwood Hills Property Owners Association from roughly 1975 to 2002, as collected by its then president, Harriet Miller. The Westwood Hills Property Owners Association lobbied against UCLA’s construction of several new facilities, including residence halls and an athletic complex. In 1977, Miller and the WHPOA sued the UC Regents over their plan to construct a new residence hall against the wishes of the Association. They were also active in efforts to stop construction of an $84 million retail-theater complex in Westwood Village during the mid-nineties by real estate developer Ira Smedra. The contents of this collection comprise notes, clippings, correspondence, and other organizational materials of the WHPOA, as well as numerous environmental impact reports, studies, and plans created by UCLA and then passed on to WHPOA for review.

Biographical / historical:

Established in 1958, the Westwood Hills Property Owners Association (WHPOA) is a volunteer neighborhood organization which has been dedicated to protecting homeowners' interests in and around Westwood, monitoring such issues as housing, noise, transportation, and local business.

Arrangement:

Materials are arranged chronologically in four series – 1. studies and reports, 2. development plans, 3. correspondence, and 4. clippings and organizational materials.

Within each series, materials are organized chronologically and according to material type at the file level, except for series 1.2 – “Environmental impact reports/assessments” and series 2.1 – “Long-range development plans” - which are organized at the item level.
