Background

Scope and content:

This collection consists of two binders with 58 black and white photographs (8x10) taken on the Navajo Reservation by Ilka Hartmann in 1971. The images consist of a series titled "Tribes: The Navajo (Diné). There are a few photographs from this series that were taken during the Occupation of Alcatraz Island and an additional two images depicting the Hopi.

There are also 11 photographs (11 x 14) that were part of an exhibit at the Oakland Museum of California. Additionally there is assorted print ephemera and books related to the Navajo, Native Americans, and Hartmann's photography.

Biographical / historical:

Ilka Hartmann is a photographer. She was born in Hamburg, Germany, and moved to the San Francisco Bay Area in 1964.
