Background

Scope and content:

Four volumes describe artifacts in the Joel Sabin Griswold Memorial Collection, part of the Southwest Museum collection. It includes descriptions and hand-drawn illustrations for baskets, stone fragments, blankets, arrowheads, beadwork and stone jewelry, clothing and silver jewelry that comprise the Collection. Volume 1 also includes itineraries of road trips made to "Indian Country" and other stops from 1927-1948. Trips were made with Joel S.G. between 1927-1936 and with others from 1936-1948, with a stop in excursions from 1943-1945 during World War II.

Baskets described in Volume 1 include those made by Oneida, Pima, Papago, and Apache people. Volume 2 describes baskets by Mojave Apache, Hopi, Yucatan Mexico, Hualapai, Paiute, Shoshone, Pomo, Makaki, Salash, and Ojibway people. It also includes baskets from Alaska and Canada, and description of clothing, canoes, and other artifacts from Alaska. Volume 3 describes artifacts from Pima, Maricopa, Acoma, and Hopi cultures, including stone fragments and blankets. Volume 4 describes arrowheads, bead work, stone jewelry, clothing, and silver jewelry.
